Chitting Potatoes

I have this Felicity Kendall inspired desire to pop out to my  neat and tidy vegetable garden and pull  up a few glorious organically grown items to lovingly prepare for my angelic children.  They will of course be very thankful for  my hard work, tireless effort and all offer to tend the land so we can grow yet more edible delights.

Heading firmly back to reality I know these things do not happen without  preparation.  We are still working hard on the angelic children, surely it must be easier to get the vegetable patch planted and growing?  We had a small patch last year and grew yummy runner beans which I thought were very bad at producing until I saw the  little lovelies helping themselves to them when in the garden.  I was not sure whether to be cross or really pleased! We had amazing success with Raspberry bushes,  ignored them all summer and they thanked us with an bumper crop.  The tomatoes were not as grateful and gave us a dismal response to our labour, although   the football which kept knocking the stakes down may have had something to do with that.  We planted a few potatoes last year and hope to continue in greater numbers this summer.

They have been chitting away for a few weeks now and we will be persuading the oldest teen to help dig their new resting place next week.  Such a funny word which has obviously caused a lot of amusement to our not so angelic tribe!  Any experts reading,  do they look "chitted" enough?

Sitting next to them on the kitchen windowsill is a hanging basket planted with Strawberries, I hoped the delicious fruit would be safe from stray footballs and hungry children hanging high.  There is also another basket of herbs  growing next to it.  This is probably going to be my best hope of realising the opening the door and picking the produce dream.

In case all fails I am sure   Mr Cress Man will keep us smiling all summer.

What are you planting at the moment?

  1. oh yes! I have that Felicity Kendal feeling all the time. At the moment, we have some guerilla spring onions lurking in the veg patch, and I got a whole load of swiss chard out of it this afternoon - enough to cook a chard and potato curry which was yummy. However, I didn't even think of trying it on the kids! My kids also 'scrump' especially my daughter , who I have seen down on her hands and knees eating greens like a horse...Be pleased! (I know I sound smug, but I don't have too much to be smug about!) Our potatoes are in now - the Husband is trying to get staggered cropping. I remain to be convinced. Good Luck!

  3. I can't even begin to think about the garden - that will have to wait until next year. I just want my house back. Yet you're enticing me and I'm sure I could manage a hanging basket or two and perhaps a couple of troughs - I've long since given up on angelic children!

  5. Your spuds look grand - chitting is controversial apparently, some do, some don't!

  8. I'm no expert but your spuds look well chitted to me. As for angelic children, I'm definitely no expert on those, and I've had seventeen years of practice.

  9. My boys are at an age now where football is king & any plants would have a nil chance of survival!! Hopefully soon I can start to plant again. It must be amazing to be able to do that!

  10. Good luck with the veg patch. I'm a hopeless gardener and am always pleasantly surprised if anything survives. Have just caught up with your previous post too. Hope that the girls felt that their exams went well. All the best, Jx

  12. Sadly, my garden isn't big enough for a veg patch and I only have two proper window sills so don't grow anything myself! Lots of my plants have died (I think the dogs wee on them!) and we're going to have a hosepipe ban this summer so I think I'll just buy lots of pelargoniums as they do OK without too much water!
Love the strawberry and herbs idea, hope your potatoes are successful.
